Hip Pain
Did you know some of the common causes of hip pain can be arthritis, car accidents, or injuries sustained through being an athlete.
What Is Hip Pain ?
The following are common diagnoses that people who suffer from hip pain may be given:
- Osteoarthritis: The gradual wearing away of the hip joint cartilage due to inflammation inside the joint. This can have many different causes ranging from repetitive overuse of the hips or lack of movement to other conditions that weaken the cartilage. The pain from osteoarthritis can be found at many different locations including the thigh, glutes, knee, or groin.
- Bursitis: The bursa is a fluid-filled sac that helps reduce friction between moving tissues of the body. The Trochanteric bursa which is found on the outside of the hip usually causes pain and tenderness on the outer hip or thigh. When the muscles and tendons over the bursa are not able to slide very well, the bursa becomes swollen and may cause pain.
- Hip Fractures: A hip fracture, often resulting from a fall or accident, is a common cause of severe hip pain, especially in older adults when joints and bones are more brittle.
- Overuse Injuries: Repetitive movements or long periods of activity can strain the hip joint, leading to inflammation and pain. This is common in athletes or individuals who engage in activities like running or cycling.
What Are The Symptoms Of Hip Pain ?
Hip pain can manifest in several ways, making daily activities difficult. Common symptoms include difficulty walking, stiffness when getting up in the morning, trouble sleeping, and sensations of numbness or tingling in the hip or leg. These symptoms can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, limiting mobility and causing discomfort during daily activities.
To manage this pain, many people try various treatments, such as using ice or heat to reduce inflammation or discomfort. Others use lubricants or TENS units (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) to alleviate pain. While these methods are often used in an attempt to find relief, they don’t always address the root cause of the pain or provide lasting results. As a result, individuals may continue to experience persistent pain, hindering their ability to move freely or enjoy daily activities. At Top Notch Physical Therapy, we offer more effective, targeted solutions to help address the underlying issues and relieve pain.
What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Hip Pain ?
At Top Notch Physical Therapy, we take a comprehensive approach to treating hip pain, balancing the need for both immediate relief and long-term recovery. The first step in our process is to understand the root cause of the pain. We guide our patients through the assessment process to ensure they are fully informed about their condition and how to address it. This understanding empowers our patients to be active participants in their recovery.
Once we’ve identified the underlying cause, we offer a variety of interventions tailored to each individual. One of the key treatments we use is dry needling, a method in which we target specific muscles that contribute to hip pain. By inserting thin needles into tight muscle areas, we can release tension and promote healing more effectively than with manual techniques alone. Our team are certified in dry needling, ensuring that you receive the highest standard of care with the most effective treatment available.
In addition to dry needling, we utilize mobilizations, stretches, and exercises. Mobilizations help restore movement and flexibility in the hip joint, while stretches relieve tightness in the muscles surrounding the hip. Tailored exercises are designed to strengthen the muscles that support the hip joint, improving stability and preventing future injuries. These exercises are carefully selected based on the unique needs of each patient, focusing on the specific areas causing discomfort.
Throughout treatment, we continue to educate our patients on how to manage their symptoms at home, empowering them to prevent future flare-ups. At Top Notch Physical Therapy, our goal is to help you not only alleviate pain but also restore full function and get back to enjoying a higher quality life.
