What Is Sciatica ?

Sciatica is often caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. One of the most common causes is a herniated disc in the lower spine, where the disc bulges and presses on the sciatic nerve.

Spinal stenosis, or narrowing of the spinal canal, can also put pressure on the nerve, leading to pain. Degenerative disc disease occurs as the spine naturally wears down over time, potentially affecting the nerves. Other causes include muscle spasms in the piriformis muscle, which can irritate the sciatic nerve, and trauma or injury to the lower back.

Proper diagnosis is key to determining the exact cause and appropriate treatment.

What Are The Symptoms Of Sciatica ?

Do you have numbness or tingling down your leg and into your foot? You’ve probably Googled it and it’s suggested that you are suffering from sciatica. While it’s unadvisable to self-diagnose through an internet search, if you’re experiencing pain running down the side of the leg, this may be a result of sciatica.

In addition to pain, you may find that you can’t sit for long periods, or you notice this pain while walking for extended periods. Sciatica often causes discomfort when engaging in everyday activities, like sitting at a desk, driving, or standing for long periods of time. The pain can feel sharp, burning, or like an electric shock, often radiating from the lower back down one leg, making it hard to move or perform normal activities.

Perhaps you’ve tried stretching or using heat, but these remedies just aren’t working, and you’re still dealing with these symptoms. It’s essential to seek proper treatment to address the root cause of the pain.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Sciatica ?

At Top Notch Physical Therapy, we focus on identifying the root cause of your sciatica symptoms and understanding where they may be coming from. Whether you’ve been dealing with sciatica for an extended period or it has just started, our team is here to help you regain control of your life and reduce the pain.

We begin with a thorough evaluation to assess your symptoms, posture, and movement patterns. Based on this assessment, we develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Our approach typically includes manual therapy, which helps alleviate pressure on the sciatic nerve, reduce inflammation, and improve the mobility of your spine and hips. We may also incorporate therapeutic exercises to strengthen the muscles surrounding the spine and improve overall function.

Stretching and strengthening exercises are key components in relieving sciatica. We guide you through a set of exercises designed to improve flexibility, reduce tension, and prevent further irritation of the sciatic nerve. Additionally, we offer modalities such as heat and ice therapy to manage inflammation and pain.

For more severe cases, we may recommend posture correction techniques or educate you on proper body mechanics to avoid movements that exacerbate pain. We also focus on providing education on lifestyle changes, like ergonomic adjustments at work, sleeping positions, and how to move safely throughout your day to avoid future flare-ups.
