Lymphedema

Do you suffer from lymphedema? Lymphedema can be caused by a variety of factors, such as breast cancer surgery, congenital conditions, or other types of surgery. Our lymphatic system lies just beneath the skin, so any surgery that disrupts this system can lead to lymphedema down the line.

What Is Lymphedema ?

Lymphedema is a condition where excess fluid builds up in the body’s tissues, often in the arms or legs, due to a blockage or damage in the lymphatic system. This fluid retention causes swelling and discomfort, which can become chronic if left untreated. In some cases, the condition can affect other areas, like the face, abdomen, or chest. The buildup of fluid can also lead to tightness, heaviness, and pain. If not properly managed, lymphedema can lead to infection, reduced mobility, and skin complications. Early intervention and proper treatment can help manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life.

What Are The Symptoms Of Lymphedema ?

Symptoms of lymphedema include tightness, swelling, and sometimes a feeling of heaviness. These symptoms often occur when there is an increase in volume in the limbs, such as the arms, legs, face, or breasts. Other symptoms include:

  • Restricted range of motion – As the swelling increases, it may limit the movement of the affected limb, making it harder to bend or stretch.
  • Skin changes – The skin over the swollen area may become thicker, tight, or hardened, and in some cases, may develop a textured appearance.
  • Numbness or tingling – A sensation of fluid buildup can make the skin more vulnerable to infections, causing frequent skin infections and cellulitis.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Lymphedema ?

To combat these symptoms, many people may try simple solutions, like wearing compression garments, and believe that’s all that’s needed. However, this is not enough to fully manage lymphedema.

At Top Notch Physical Therapy, we provide comprehensive care for lymphedema, which includes four essential treatments:

  1. Decongestant Therapy: The first step is to reduce swelling in the affected limb as much as possible.
  2. Skin Care: Proper skin care is vital to prevent infections. We help ensure your skin stays clean, moisturized, and healthy.
  3. Therapeutic Exercises: We guide you through exercises that help move the fluid from your limbs into the proper areas for digestion, effectively reducing swelling.
  4. Manual Lymph Drainage: If the fluid isn’t draining as it should, we use manual techniques to reroute it to areas where it can flow more freely, achieving the desired results.

Our goal at Top Notch Physical Therapy is to not only treat the symptoms of lymphedema but to also empower our patients with the knowledge and tools they need to manage their condition effectively. We work closely with each individual to create a personalized treatment plan that promotes long-term health and mobility.
